Diccon dives in out East
29 September 2009

On a beautiful autumnal morning in deepest darkest Suffolk, Diccon attempted his first ever competitive swimming event. The Inaugural Great East Swim held at Alton Water just south of Ipswich was the venue and a mile was the distance. Never before had Diccon attempted a non-stop mile swim, but he was up for the challenge and keen to beat Tim Morgan’s Great London Swim time of 37 minutes. The second wave (9.30am) meant a very early start from London… and not a Caffe Nero in sight!
Starting wide and at the back of the pack to avoid trouble, Diccon soon settled into a rhythm and began to overtake the back marking breast-strokers. The water was clean and a balmy 18c. Soon Diccon began to over take a few more as his confidence grew. The finish was in sight and a late spurt lead to a pleasing time of 34 minutes (the elites, including a few Olympic medalists completed the course in 18 minutes). A sub 30 minute time must be the next goal – overall a very enjoyable event.
