18 August 2009
After being comprehensively beaten on our 2 previous outing against the Minor Premiers West Wyalong, round 1 – 133 – 33, at Wyalong and 111 – 30 at Home, the Two Blues side were all as one in their determination to make the Bulldogs earn the remaining Grand Final birth.
With nothing to lose and all to gain, senior players took the younger chargers aside, encouraging them to leave nothing behind, and follow the 3 rules, the coach had stated from the very first bounce of the season. “In first” “in hard” and “Never Give Up”
The focus, belief and determination was evident as the Two Blues kicked the first 2 majors, a series of shots hitting the post and fading through for a behind allowed the Bulldogs to keep within striking distance, kicking truly with their first 6 shots on goal.
The dire struggle continued all day, with not more than 8 points in it at any change, with the Two blues leading by 5 points into the last quarter, again hitting the post and then fading one through for a minor score, the Two Blues were unable to get the jump, that 2 goal buffer that would have set them up, to be able to come home with heads held high, from the 15 minute mark in the last term, the Two Blues backline suffered and thwarted multiple raids at goal, conceding 7 points in 10 minutes, holding the Bulldogs majorless, when big Andy Rainbird, again hit the post, the Bulldogs made the Two Blues pay with 2 quick goals, another point to the goodies ensued in 2 more quick goals to the Minor Premiers.
A final major to the Two Blues, with 6 minutes remaining lifted heads and spirits, but another quick goal put pay to the fairy tale, the Two Blues extremely gallant in defeat 120 – 101, the disappoint evident on the young and old faces alike, the standard of football was commended by all who had witnessed the display.
In the rooms an emotional coach was overflowing with pride and adulation for his team, encouraging them to take the disappointment and use it for thoughts of the future, praise was heaped on all players for their efforts, singling out younger players who step up to the mark and the old war horses who, from putting their hand up to “help out if short” to playing in a preliminary final.
In the wash up, no retirements had been announced, with the Saturday night wake spilling over into the traditional No Undie Sunday, at 12:01am, from all reports the drinking has subsided and all will return to normal life today, knowing they made the best side in the comp earn their spot, to see who is the best.
Grand Final to be played at Barellan, with the Northern Riverina League Club Champions, hosting West Wyalong and Lake Cargellico in the Seniors, whilst looking for home town success will be Under 12’s & Under 14’s Footballers, and C & B Grade netballers, and as they say in the classic carn TWO BLUES.
