Limeys End of Season Report

15 May 2009

The Limeys season was a mixed bag. From moments of greatness that echoed the grand achievements of yesteryear, to matches of straightforward mediocrity, our journey was neither smooth nor prolific. Those of us that have played for the Limeys, particularly in the latter stages of the season, know full well that, for a team that boasts such an array of ability, to finish mid-table overly flatters the league and our opponents within it.

In their first three games of the season the Limeys had scored seven goals; unfortunately they had conceded ten and only managed to secure one draw and as many league points. This sorry state of affairs left the Limeys languishing at the bottom of the table, a position they made their own for the next two games. However, half way through the season, their fortunes were to change. The Limeys got their act together and started playing like a team. An influx of new players inspired a new confidence. The Limeys grew and began to start winning.

The highlight of the season, as far as matches go, was the drubbing of the high-flying SFO by eight goals to nothing; we embarrassed them and we did it with style. Another highlight was the introduction, for the final game of the season, of a player who had been waiting patiently for a game since Christmas. Boasting a pedigree from Scandinavian shores, Sandra had a lot to live up to. She did not disappoint. It’s probably best that she wasn’t allowed into the changing room post-match because the volume of complements her game received would have reddened the cheeks of the hardiest of individuals.

With Sandra and Joff making their debuts, we finished the season with a deserved 2-0 win. Credit must go to the players who made it week in, week out; and to those who stepped in when we needed them most. Special mentions for James H. for his leadership, to Gilo for his finishing and to Ali for filling the least enviable position on the field with a level of surety that breeds confidence and respect. As a team, the Limeys are so much more than our league position would suggest. But we know that. All we need is another chance to prove it.

The Limeys are: J. Hogben (captain), B. Spooner (v-captain), A. Hills, J. Charters, N. Thompson, T. Morgan, D. Loy, C. Dews, S. Dews, J. Taylor, G. Mansell, R. Sutton, T. Kerry, A. Anstey, N. Galley, M, Holmes & S. Almqvist.
